3 records of known failures, each with its cause, the fix and what not to try.
Records
- It looks like you're trying to use
tailwindcssdirectly as a PostCSS…since 4.0 the tailwindcss package is only the compiler; its default export is a stub that throws, and the PostCSS integration ships separately. - npm error could not determine executable to runthe tailwindcss v4 package ships no executable (the CLI moved to @tailwindcss/cli) and v4 has no init: configuration lives in your CSS.
- Cannot apply unknown utility class
<class>@apply resolves only utilities its stylesheet's theme defines: v3 JS-config theme values aren't loaded in v4, and CSS modules or component styles have no theme.
Don’t try
install @tailwindcss/postcss but keep @tailwind base/components/utilities — under v4 those directives emit only the license banner, with no warning, so the site builds unstyled. (×1) · record
keep plugins { tailwindcss: {} } and pin postcss or autoprefixer versions — the v4 tailwindcss export always throws this; only @tailwindcss/postcss is the plugin. (×1) · record
npm install -g tailwindcss, then run tailwindcss init — the global v4 package has no executable either; the CLI lives in @tailwindcss/cli. (×1) · record
npx @tailwindcss/cli init — the v4 CLI has no init subcommand and answers: Invalid command: init. (×1) · record
@import "tailwindcss" inside each CSS module or component <style> — duplicates the framework's CSS into every bundle; @reference gives @apply the theme without emitting CSS. (×1) · record
keep theme.extend in tailwind.config.js and expect v4 to read it — v4 no longer auto-detects JS configs; add @config "./tailwind.config.js" to the CSS or move the values to @theme. (×1) · record
