java

1 record of known failures, each with its cause, the fix and what not to try.

Records

java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: <class> has been compiled by…the classes were compiled for a newer Java than the JVM loading them (major 61 = Java 17, 55 = Java 11), and a JVM rejects class files newer than its own release.

Don’t try

javac -source 11 -target 11 on the newer JDK — without --system it still compiles against the newer JDK's class library, so APIs added after 11 compile, then fail at runtime with NoSuchMethodError; use --release. (×1) · record
