java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: <class> has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 61.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 55.0
Cause
the classes were compiled for a newer Java than the JVM loading them (major 61 = Java 17, 55 = Java 11), and a JVM rejects class files newer than its own release.
Fix
java -version # the JVM that really runs it: PATH, JAVA_HOME, IDE run config, service or container image# run on Java >= the class file's release (major - 44: 52=8, 55=11, 61=17, 65=21), e.g. JAVA_HOME -> a JDK 17# or build for the old runtime: javac --release 11 | Maven maven.compiler.release=11 | Gradle options.release = 11Don’t try
javac -source 11 -target 11 on the newer JDK — without --system it still compiles against the newer JDK's class library, so APIs added after 11 compile, then fail at runtime with NoSuchMethodError; use --release.
