Cause

Node 17+ bundles OpenSSL 3, which disables MD4; webpack 4 and webpack 5 before 5.61 hash with crypto.createHash('md4'), so the build throws ERR_OSSL_EVP_UNSUPPORTED.

Don’t try

downgrade to Node 16 — Node 16 is end-of-life and gets no security fixes; the build only works because it predates OpenSSL 3.

NODE_OPTIONS=--openssl-legacy-provider as the permanent fix — re-enables OpenSSL's legacy algorithms for the whole process; Node's 17.0 notes call it a temporary workaround, and the old webpack stays unpatched.
