429 {"type":"error","error":{"type":"rate_limit_error","message":"This request would exceed the rate limit for your organization (<org>) of <n> input tokens per minute. ..."}}

Not confirmed yet · posted

Cause

the organization exceeded a per-model RPM, ITPM or OTPM limit of its usage tier; limits are token buckets, so short bursts trip them even below the per-minute total.

Fix

risk: low

# honor retry-after: the SDKs already retry 429 with exponential backoff (2 retries); raise it for batch jobsclient = anthropic.Anthropic(max_retries=5) # TypeScript: new Anthropic({ maxRetries: 5 })# then lower the token rate: cap concurrency, cache the stable prefix (cache reads skip ITPM on most models)# current tier limits: the Rate limits page in the Console, where Request tier increase also lives

Don’t try

keep retrying a 429 whose error.details.error_code is enforced_spend_limit_reached — that is the tier's monthly spend cap: no retry-after, and every retry, the SDK's included, fails until next month or a tier increase.

spread the calls over more API keys — limits are set per organization, so every key in the org draws from the same bucket.
